UM Automobile Insurance Benefits: Uninsured and Underinsured
Your own automobile insurance policy may provide monetary benefits to you if you are injured by the negligence of someone driving an automobile. This also applies if you are injured while a passenger in a vehicle. If the person at fault (1) does not have insurance, or (2) does not have enough insurance to cover your “damages”, you can potentially receive benefits under your own automobile policy and the “UM” coverage section.
BEWARE – do not agree to settle any claim against the negligent driver until you consult with a lawyer. A settlement can void any potential UM coverage you might be entitled to receive.
Having UM coverage on your automobile policy is crucial since many drivers do not have insurance or carry only minimal amounts. UM coverage can provide benefits for medical expenses, but it can also cover damage claims for loss of wages, physical impairment, pain and suffering, and even death.
In considering how much UM coverage you may need to purchase, simply think about the expense of an injury which requires several weeks or months of medical treatment and loss of work. Many of our clients have purchased $100,000.00, $250,000.00, or more of UM coverage. Typically, UM coverage is very affordable.
Finally, do not rely upon the advice of an insurance agent that you have “full coverage.” This means nothing! It is very important that you check your auto policy declarations page to see if you have UM coverage and how much. Also, do not “waive” UM coverage if suggested by the insurance agent. Buy UM coverage for each of your vehicles.
We will be happy to answer any questions you might have about your UM coverage. Call Robert Boyd and Associates.
